Shoreditch · Cocktail bar
Seed Library
Seed Library has the pedigree — Mr Lyan’s team, a basement under one of Shoreditch’s better boutique hotels — to lean hard into spectacle, and deliberately doesn’t. The bar’s own description of its approach as “stripped-back and analogue” undersells how much genuine flavour research sits behind a menu that looks, on the page, deceptively simple. This review’s 4.5-star rating leans heavily on that research, not on the basement setting alone.
The Room
Warm 1970s tones rather than the exposed-brick-and-Edison-bulb Shoreditch default — low lighting, a lived-in rather than designed-yesterday feel, and a laid-back atmosphere helped by a resident DJ policy rather than a curated playlist. It reads as a proper late-night neighbourhood bar that happens to be extremely good at its job, not a destination bar performing casualness. Being tucked in the basement of One Hundred Shoreditch keeps the crowd more locals-and-regulars than passing tourist traffic.
What to Order
The Purple Shiso Martini is the drink most worth ordering on a first visit — vodka and dry vermouth built around Mark’s Purple shiso leaf, an ingredient choice that sounds like a gimmick and isn’t; it actually changes the drink’s whole register rather than sitting on top as a garnish note.
The wider menu leans into heritage ingredients reworked through classic cocktail formats — East Mediterranean flavours turn up more than the average London cocktail list — and changes frequently enough that a repeat visit is worth doing on its own terms rather than re-ordering the same drink.
The Drinks List
This is a bar built entirely around its own cocktail programme rather than a wine-and-beer afterthought — the “maker’s touch” framing isn’t just marketing copy, and staff can talk through why a specific ingredient is doing what it’s doing in a given drink, which is rarer than it should be at this price point. Non-cocktail drinkers are reasonably served but this is not the room to come to for that.
What You Will Pay
Cocktails run in the mid-to-upper teens, in line with a serious Shoreditch cocktail bar rather than a neighbourhood pub — not cheap, but fair for the level of actual technique going into each drink rather than a room charging London-destination prices for a simple stirred serve.
The Verdict
Go on a Wednesday or Thursday if a proper conversation with the person making your drink matters to you — weekends get properly busy and the room’s more laid-back character comes through better with some breathing room. Order something you haven’t heard of rather than defaulting to a classic; the bar’s actual strength is in the reworked versions, not the straight ones.
The Wednesday-to-Sunday schedule is worth noting before planning a visit around it — this isn’t a seven-night-a-week room, and turning up on a Monday or Tuesday expecting it open is the most common way to have a wasted trip to Shoreditch High Street.
The resident-DJ policy on busier nights also shifts the room’s register later in the evening, so an early visit and a late one are genuinely different experiences of the same bar rather than the same night at two different volumes.
What’s Being Said
A basement bar trading on a well-known name could easily coast on reputation alone. Seed Library instead keeps genuinely experimenting with ingredients most London cocktail menus don’t touch, which is the harder and more interesting choice, and it’s paying off in a room that feels distinct from the wider Shoreditch bar scene rather than another entry in it.
Being attached to a hotel could easily have pushed this toward a safer, more tourist-facing cocktail list — the opposite has happened. The menu reads like it’s built for regulars willing to order something unfamiliar, not for a passing hotel guest wanting a recognisable classic, and that choice is exactly why it’s held its place among London’s better-regarded bars rather than being just another hotel add-on.
Shoreditch High Street’s location, a short walk from both the Overground and the older Brick Lane end of the neighbourhood, makes it an easy last stop on an evening that started somewhere else entirely.
